First the good parts: The book is very well written. Although in the first chapters the reader is swamped with information and might feel a bit bored, everything is tied together in the end in a coherent thesis. Toffler maintains throughout the book a good grasp on how to build up to his solution offer at the end. I also enjoyed the insight into how people thought in the late 60s, when, after the moon landing, anything seemed possible.That being said, his research is uneven, ranging from legitimate scientific studies to wild speculations. I am not deducting points for what turned out to be false predictions, since the future simply cannot be predicted. I actually admire the courage to offer a prediction at all. However, there is a naiveté that cannot be excused. When writing about how to tackle future problems, one needs to have a certain technical or scientific expertise which Toffler is seriously lacking. Hopeful yet totally worthless suggestions in the last chapter have made the time I spend on this book a waste. Therefore I cannot, in good faith, recommend this book to anyone who would like solid arguments and helpful suggestions regarding our society's very real problem of coping with constant change.

Er zeigt mit einer Leichtigkeit, als würde er einen Fächer aufklappen verschiedene Beispiele und Perspektiven auf, die wie ein Flutlicht offensichtliche Veränderungen und Zusammenhänge in der heutigen Zeit aus dem Dunkel zerrt. Keine Ahnung was diese neuen Gedanken und ausgeleuchteten Ideen mit mir machen - im Moment bin ich jedenfalls erstmal nur beeindruckt.

When I first started to read this book I had no idea when it was written. The relevence of the subject matter to today made me feel that the book was just recently composed. What a shock to learn that it was written 30 years ago. While not all of his predictions have come true, it is truly amazing how much he got right.This book takes you on a trip from where we've been to where we are going. It explaines why the social unrest we have been experiencing has taken the form it has. Toffler also tries to give us some solutions on how to cope with an ever changing world. Unfortunatly we are still too technocratic and econocentric to have these solutions applied.

On the Internet, it's no longer true that 'no one knows you're a dog'. Early Internet communication usually took the form of email or online chat; now it's not enough. Intra-company and intra-joint-venture communication that uses the Internet as its main medium is increasingly shifting to voice. Stranglely, people want to talk to a real person and thereby 'personalize' and increase the intimacy of the relationship. High tech, high touch says Toffler; this is an example from 1998. The voice can be telephone or IP telephony from PC to PC. In any case it is a decrease in anonymity and an increase in humanization. Toffler continues to be correct.
